The depths to which Democrats will sink in order to score cheap political points knows no bounds. As a result of all of that free love and LSD in the glory days of their youth, Democrat thought processes are detached from the here and now. They still use 40 year old political slogans to describe modern 21st century threats. They engage in repeated oversimplifications of complex problems, which leads to goofy beliefs like the one that Bush orchestrated 9/11 to benefit the “military industrial complex” or that there is any scientific consensus on the root cause of rising Earth temperatures.
The cold reality today is that there are US boots on the ground in Iraq. The nature of this conflict means those boots are increasingly being recovered with a foot and a single dogtag secured by the laces so that when that soldier gets killed by an IED constructed with Iranian ordinance or electronics we can identify him and notify his next of kin.
Democrats argue that that they love and support the troops, regardless of their public denunciations of the war and that’s why they want to bring them home. On the surface, that seems simple and genuine enough. But if you want to see the truth, you must look beyond the rhetoric and pay attention to their actions as they relate to Iraq.
To be clear: I am not accusing Democrats of wishing our troops dead. I am accusing them of failing to see the damage and long-term consequences of allowing al Qaeda another base of operations in Iraq.
Joe Biden (D-DE), as head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee stamped the Democrat Seal of Approval on the language in the recent non-binding Senate resolution that rebuked the President for adding more troops to help secure Iraq. In this poison pill, which helps give the enemy hope that any day US troops will be forced to retreat, Democrats called the addition of 21,500 extra men to secure Iraq an “escalation” and said it was not in our national interest to do so. With all due respect to those who hold that opinion, it is in our national interest to win in Iraq, while it is not in our national interest to lose.
In the pre-Clinton years, we used to call the addition of extra troops “calling in the reinforcements”. Now it’s an “escalation”, which of course attaches a negative connotation. Phased redeplolyment good. Escalation bad. Get it?
Actions such as this symbolic vote are meaningless and are done for a specific purpose: To test the waters. To try and come up with something; anything to throw a wrench in the President’s plans. With a little help from Reuters dogged –and frequently inaccurate– coverage of US casualty figures and the dearth of coverage of the hundreds of enemy killed in Iraq in the last three weeks, they may succeed.
But it’s not just this vote that concerns me.
Democrats poisoned the atmosphere for weeks blathering about cutting off funding and all kinds of crazy ideas. But when it came time to put their money where their mouth is, they blinked. President Bush’s pick to lead Multinational Force Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, was confirmed this morning by the Senate.
But he didn’t just squeak by. The vote was unanimous 81 - 0 with 19 abstentions. Even the President’s harshest critics voted to confirm Petraeus. Biden, Kennedy, Hagel, Obama and all of the other naysayers. The question must be asked then what do these Senators stand for? They stand for holding on to their Senate seats. Period. They talk tough to their constituents about opposing an unpopular war, but when they actually had a chance to stand and be counted; a chance to back up their rhetoric by actions; they caved in. They unanimously confirmed his choice for leading the renewed push in Iraq that they opposed.
The inconsistencies don’t stop there. The coming week will bring more debate on yet another non-binding resolution denouncing the war. The only interests that piece of worthless Senate garbage will serve are those of global jihad. Democrats seek what they believe will be a face-saving withdrawal. But the consequences are unacceptable. The followers of militant Islam will view this as a defeat of Biblical significance; of David against Goliath, which will only stiffen their resolve to kill us wherever we are.
