Must everything be sexualized these days?
A recent study has concluded that exposure to sexual imagery can cause psychological as well as physical harm to children who are exposed to it on a regular basis, especially girls. This is bad for children. It isn’t rocket science. It is self-evident that the current generation of Baby Boomers, while currently occupying the positions of power in the government and media, are –to a large extent– responsible for the messages being sent through the various media formats, whether they be Internet, print or audio/visual.
It is also self-evident that the current generation of Baby Boomers has no intention of applying any enforceable standards of decency to these forms of media.
Take television. Explicit sexual imagery used to be confined to the wee hours of the morning. But due to the explosion of violent, sexually explicit programming now available on cable television; a consequence of the liberal penchant for instant gratification; the major networks and even “hard” news programs (no pun intended, really…) have somehow deemed it necessary in recent years to titillate their audiences nonstop.
The sexualization is no longer even confined to the programming, it has now infested the advertising as well. Consider the good looks but lack of true talent of “superstars” such as Anna Kournikova or Danica Patrick. Neither has won a major title in their respective sport but both have starred in highly sexually suggestive advertising and magazine spreads.
Ms. Patrick’s recent contribution to commercial “talent” was a spot that had her speeding and being pulled over by a motorcycle officer. As she pulled to a stop, she checked her makeup and parted her blouse, exposing some rather insignificant cleavage and a hint of undergarment. The subliminal message sent was that by showing enough leg or perhaps a breast, a good looking female may be able to squirm out of a ticket. The piece ends with a visibly chagrined Danica Patrick unable to seduce the cop because she was a female officer.
Sex is everywhere.
It is marketed, peddled, and foisted on elementary school children on a regular basis. It is marketed and pushed by cable news networks including Fox News with it’s endless coverage of Anna Nicole Smith, and the clusterf#@& that ensued in Florida when she died. What is it about courts and judges in Florida anyway? Fox constantly shows long close-up or zoomed-in leg shots of its female anchors. Over and over. I’m not sure how sexualization of news programming is a conservative value.
When Fox first started, it was a breath of fresh air. But many events, not the least of which were the tainting of the judicial process for 8 Marines by Alan Colmes, the constant glorification and repetition of terrorist propaganda on-air and the sexualization of the news have left me wholly unimpressed with Fox News’ fair, balanced or conservative credentials.
Sex is all over the Internet. Many of the top Internet blog sites are now amateur porn sites. Smut is now readily at your fingertips 24/7. There are organizations such as N.A.M.B.L.A. that openly advocate for the legalization of sex with children, whilst cloaking themselves in the First Amendment. Thankfully they’ve crawled back into the sewer from whence they came, due to much public ostracism.
There are now even instances of people being caught with virtual “child” porn, where the victim isn’t a real child but a completely computer-generated contrivance. This strains credulity as well as constitutional limits because in general, in order for a crime to have been committed, there must be a victim. In this case, the alleged victim is virtual.
But this narrow view is dangerous.
I have studied well over 100 sex crimes and serial murders. Sexual predators wait months and in many cases years before striking. They groom victims and build confidences. Serial sexual predators who have murdered their victims have stated that in many cases they objectified their victim, not perceiving them as human, making it easier to conduct their assaults against the dignity of their victim. They also stated nothing could have stopped them.
Anecdotal and statistical evidence point to an obvious truth; that as sex has become a bigger and bigger part of our culture, sex crimes and deviant sexual behavior are also becoming more prevalent. Combine that with role models such as crotch-shot queen Paris Hilton or Anna Nicole Smith, and it doesn’t look good for the nation’s young girls.
