The Many Meanings of Moderate

Crime and Punishment, Illegal Immigration, Political Correctness, Politics, Society/Culture

moderate - mod? er ? ate (’mä d(&) r&t - 1). [adj.] Avoiding extremes in behavior or expression. Observing reasonable limits. 2). [v.] Tending toward the mean or average amount or dimension. Having average or less than average quality. Mediocre. 3). [n.] Professing or characterized by political or social beliefs that are not extreme. © 2007 Merriam Webster Inc.

When examined in gross detail, the English language is one of rich expression. But it can also be used in many negative ways. One can use it to misinform and therefore to manipulate people. One can also use it stroke one’s own ego into erroneously thinking that their belief systems represent the values of the vast majority of Americans. Take the word “moderate” for example. John McCain (R.I.N.O. - AZ) is a self-professed “moderate”. But in whose opinion? There is nothing moderate about a sitting United States Senator conspiring with other Senators to circumvent the will of the overwhelming majority of Americans by rewarding millions of foreign criminals with coveted US citizenship.Last spring, Senators Kennedy (D-MA) and McCain tried to shove an immigration bill down our throats that would have doomed this nation. Now, they’re set to try again. When I researched the Senate’s previous attempt at so-called “comprehensive immigration reform”, I admit I was cynical about what I would find. But nothing could have prepared me for the complete sellout that I would uncover after my exhaustive research. If the Senate’s version was signed into law, it would have meant - not 12 million, but 60 - 100 million people over the next 20 years, including visa holders, “guest workers” and reunified families.

With exponential growth…

Every year…

Forever.

And now that Nancy Pelosi and her minions have inherited majority control in both the House as well as the Senate, Kennedy smells blood. So he’s teaming up with McCain to ensure that –once again– the greatest American betrayal in history receives a bipartisan thumbs-up. Details of the latest Senate immigration bill are still sketchy, but two of the more contentious issues discussed thus far are the elimination of the requirement that illegal aliens return home and wait their turn and the elimination of all funding for the border fence.

The Democratic Party’s argument for eliminating the border fence is rooted in the mistaken belief that there is some sort of mandate in place for them to make drastic changes to any foreign policy issue they choose, now that they hold the majority. And with the help of more GOP defectors, both parties will soon reach a “compromise” on border security. Then, they’ll argue that a fence is no longer needed, since they’ve solved the immigration crisis in a bipartisan fashion.

I’m always amazed by the unctuousness of people such as McCain. Here is a fellow veteran that got shot down and spent five years in the Hanoi Hilton before being liberated. You’d think he would cherish and protect the freedoms this country offers above all else. But instead, he exhibits hypocrisy and inconsistency. He supports troop strength increases –ostensibly to fight terrorists in Iraq so we don’t have to fight them here– while ignoring the threats posed by foreign ID thieves, smugglers, drug lords, pedophiles and human traffickers to our national security here at home.

As the 2008 Presidential election already begins to loom large, and the candidates begin to vie for position and bragging rights, be wary of those whose aggregate national security commitment does not demonstrate consistency. Because despite McCain’s self-professed moderation; among the many meanings of moderate are two of the most frightful when applied in a national security context:

Less than average and mediocre.
