The Hillary I Know

Politics

Much discussion has centered around whether Hillary Clinton actually possesses human qualities such as empathy, emotion or likability In other words, things that translate to electability. She has faced so much criticism –and deservedly so– I often wonder whether she’s even a real human being with flesh and blood underneath that exoskeleton, or just some kind of grotesque machine like Mecha-Streisand™; with servos, wires and circuits; factory preprogrammed as a calculating political machine.

There has been so much discussion about her likability during this campaign, that she had to launch a website called “The Hillary I Know” in order to dispel what the media calls rumors and prove that there are actual people that like her.

Her pathetic, contrived, emotional outburst in response to the ridiculous puffball question “As a woman… how do you do it..?” has somehow managed to catapult her out of the hole she was in to overcome a substantial deficit and eke out a victory over Barack Obama. In her response to the questioner, she stated “Some people think elections are a game. They think it’s like who’s up or who’s down. It’s about our country. It’s about our kid’s futures. And it’s really about all of us together…” She went on: “But some of us are right and some of us are wrong. Some of us are ready and some of us are not. Some of us know what we’ll do on day 1, and some of us haven’t really thought that through enough.”

Besides being a direct slap at Barack Obama, it was also one of the most subjectively arrogant statements I have heard from a politician in a long time. If anyone treated this whole thing as a game, it was women in New Hampshire who in many cases admitted to flipping their vote and selecting Clinton over Obama based on crocodile tears instead of substance.

In defense of those tears, Clinton posited that previous presidents have also shown emotion, even tears. While that statement may be true, those particular cases are:

  1. Few and far between.

  2. Always in times of great crisis, such as large numbers of war casualties, natural calamities that kill large numbers of people and other such tragic events. Not over something as mundane as an election primary loss that would only affect her and be raucously applauded by at least half of the country.

What really surprised me in the New Hampshire Primary was how shallow and gullible the women of that state must be. We’re talking about electing the leader of the free world; Chairman of the most successful democracy and economy in history; Commander-In-Chief of the mightiest military ever conceived; not the organizer of the community bake sale. And to a woman, when interviewed, the reaction was always the same. Quotes like “You go girl!”, “That clinched it for me.” or “I really identified with her.”

Even before she squeaked by Obama in New Hampshire, her campaign was on the cusp of a shakeup. Hillary announced that she was bringing 2 of Bill Clinton’s smear merchants out of mothballs, James Carville and Paul Begala, to be campaign consultants on a voluntary basis. The addition of these 2 is a sure sign that Bill Clinton is deeply invested in his wife’s campaign. I’m quite certain they’re working furiously to dig up something to clobber Barack Obama over the head with.

Hillary’s campaign has had more facelifts than Barbara Walters and yet she still faces unheard-of negatives in polls questioning likability She simply isn’t fooling anyone and is in fact despised by huge numbers of people for her evasiveness and refusal to answer questions except on her terms. Did I mention 8 years as first lady, dozens of scandals and acceptance of 2008 campaign contributions from a federal fugitive?

On January 8, 2008, ABC News’ Jake Tapper walked the streets of New Hampshire and had the following exchange with an adorable old lady:

TAPPER: “What’s the issue that’s most important to you in terms of change?”

WOMAN: “Is this being recorded?”

TAPPER: “Yes.”

WOMAN: “Just to get rid of the Clintons.”

If Clinton can’t handle nearly losing the New Hampshire Primary, how in the hell does she expect me to believe she can handle the stresses of the presidency. If simply turning on the faucets when things don’t go your way can even get a woman elected crossing guard –not to mention elected the first female president– this country is in worse shape than I thought.
